Tool-discuss is a discussion forum for the intersection of open source technology and media art.
While in some senses this intersection should be clear-cut and well defined, it is our belief that the terms “technology” “media” and “art” are fundamentally blurry.
The first stage of tool-discuss will be an electronic mailing list. In the summer we will begin working to develop the forum into a more in-depth clearing house for all thing open source & media-art.
Tool discuss is meant to address issues such as
The boundaries and definitions of “open source,” “technology,” “media,” and “art.” The idea of open source has already been pushed outside of the world of software. How far can it be taken? Collage work from the early 20th century and sampling/appropriation in music both seem to be significant precedents for a kind of open methodology.
Ways to begin to create hardware — both in the sense of objects that can interface with computers and software, but hardware in the sense of tools and objects that can interact with, and be used by people, environments and institutions.
How can we begin to create a forum that will allow people to navigate the huge range of technical possibilities, and to allow them to find the tools, resources and collaborators that they need?
